The gasification reactivities of the hydropyrolytic chars obtained from Yunnan Yuxi coal and Xingjiang Zhundong coal were investigated by TGA using carbon dioxide as a gasifying agent. The influences of pyrolysis pressure, residence time and atmosphere on the char reactivities were studied, and the kinetic parameters of non isothermal char gasification were calculated by the homogeneous model. The gasification characteristics of the hydropyrolytic chars obtained from the above mentioned two coals were further investigated on a laboratory fixed bed reactor using steam as a gasifying agent, focusing on the effects of coke atmosphere on the gasification rate and gas compositions. TGA results showed that the hydropyrolytic chars derived from Zhundong coal had considerably better reactivity with lower activation energy than those from Yuxi coal. For both coals, the gasification reactivities of hydropyrolytic chars decreased as the carbon conversion obtained in the hydropyrolysis increased. The hydropyrolysis was beneficial to promote the reactivity of char compared to the pyrolysis under N2 atmosphere with a close carbon conversion. In the case of steam gasification, the gasification reactivity of Zhundong coal char was better than that of Yuxi coal char. Overall the Zhundong hydropyrolytic char had a higher hydrogen yield than that obtained under N2 atmosphere. However, for both chars, the molar ratio of H2 to CO approached to the calculated data under thermodynamic equilibrium with increasing the gasification temperature.
