Preparation and Characterization of PGS-PLA Blend Composite

    • Poly(glycerol sebacate) (PGS) and poly(lactic acid) (PLA) were blended at different compositions in a Haake internal mixer. The torque rheological properties, thermal properties, mechanical properties and morphologies of PGSPLA blends were studied. The torque rheological processes of the blends were different from neat PLA, which had a long low-torque process between the feading peak and the fusion peak of PLA. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) results show the glass transition temperature, crystalline temperature and melt temperature of PLA dropped and the crystallinity increased as blending with PGS. Izod impact measurements indicate that the impact resistance of the blends reaches 65.6 J/m, 447% higher than the value of neat PLA. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) reveals that PGS and PLA are phaseseparated. With the increasing of the PGS content, the domain size of the PGS dispersed phase comes larger and the blend effect turns poorer.
