Synthesis and Haemocompatibility Evaluation of Hyaluronan Immobilized Polyurethane

    • Polyurethanes containing carboxyl side groups were synthesized by a twostep solution polymerization. Hyaluronan (HA) was then immobilized onto the surface of aminofunctionalized polyurethane film which was prepared by reacting with 1,3diaminopropane in the presence of 1ethyl3[3(dimethylaminopropyl)] carbodiimide hydrochlorid (EDC). Attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATRFTIR), water contact angle measurement and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to confirm the surface changes at each step of treatment, both in morphology and chemical composition. The anticoagulation activity and cytotoxicity of the polymers were also studied. The results showed that hydrophilicity and blood compatibility of the HA immobilized polyurethane were improved. Cytotoxicity analysis indicated that the modified polyurethane can support human vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) adhesion and proliferation. The novel material with potent antithrombogenic properties could be used in bloodcontacting applications.
