Abstract

The preparation of a polyvinyl acetal by the reaction of polyvinyl alcohol with vanillin is reported. The acetalization is accomplished in a solvent of DMSO with p-toluene sulfonic acid or sulfuric acid as catalysts. The degree of acetalization may attain to 55%.Due to the hydrolytic property of acetal, vanillin will be released step by step at a very slow rate under room temperature.
