Reduction of Oxygen and Oxidation of Carbon Monoxide at the Gold Electrode Bonded on Ion Exchange Membrane

    • The gold electrode bonded on Nafion-117 ion exchange membrane (Au-SPE)was prepared by the reduction of HAuCl_4. The voltammetric relation of the Au-SPE electrodewas measured by the potential sweep method in the acid and in the alkaline solutiom, separately. The current efficiencies of the reduction of O_2 to H_2O_2 were also determined in the acid solutionand in the alkaline solution, separately. It was discovered that the electro-reduction processis controlled by the masstransfer proccss of the dissolved oxygen in the solution of the cathodiccompaitment. The proper potential for tbe electiooxidation and the detection of CO in air is,0.3 V vs. Hg/HgO reference electrode. The limitting oxidation currents were correlated tothe percentage concentrations of CO in air.The tempolary poison of the Au-SPE electrode byCO existed.
