Effects of Phenolic Resin on the Foaming Behavior and Biofilm Biomass of High Softening Point Pitch

    • Carbon foams were synthesized by self-foaming method derived from high softening point pitch as packing media in biological aerated filter system. To achieve a high biofilm biomass, phenolic resin was added into the high softening point pitch to improve the open porosity of carbon foam. When the additive mass fraction of phenolic resin is 30%,the open porosity and mass fraction of biofilm biomass of the resultant carbon foam are 100% and 5.4%,respectively.When the additive mass fraction of phenolic resin is 40%,the carbon foam has a high compressive strength of 5.2 MPa accompanied with a low open porosity and a poor uniformity of pore structure.
