Abstract: This paper discusses the relationship between on line optimization and plant automation. The model development and implementation paradigm is described then. It summarizes functional requirements for an optimization software system, which enables us to realize the paradigm, followed by a description of the major components of an equation oriented modeling and optimization system. At the end of the paper, the structure of an on line optimization application and its relationship to control strategies is discussed.
