Abstract:
The oxidation resistance of the binders of mesophase pitch and phenolic resin as well as its residual carbon was studied and the possibility of mesophase pitch used as a binder for MgO C brick was evaluated through the determination of X ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, the residual carbon of binder and true specific density of carbon. Experimental results show that the oxidation resistance of mesophase pitch is obviously better than that of phenolic resin; the residual carbon of mesophase pitch is a compact oriented and graphited carbon; while the residual carbon of phenolic resin is a loose, nonoriented and nongraphited one;the percentage of residual carbon in mesophase pitch is 65.53% and its true specific density is 1.91g/cm 3; the percentage of residual carbon in phenolic resin is 49.40% and its ture specific density is 1.73g/cm 3. The results also indicate that the oxidation resistance of binder based carbon is dependent on its microstructure.
