Abstract:
Soapless emulsion polymerization of styrene(St) was carried out on the surface of nanoscale CaCO_3.Influences of the amount of monomer on conversion and encapsulation ratio were investigated.The monomer conversion is found to increase with the increasing of St and then to slightly decrease when St is excessive.The morphology of nanoscale CaCO_3 particles after the reaction was observed by TEM,SEM,indicating that CaCO_3 nano particles are encapsulated by PS.The encapsulated CaCO_3 nano particles were treated by Soxhlet extractor to obtain real encapsulation ratio.From this study,it is found that,with proper amount of monomer,CaCO_3 nano particles are modified by PS in suitable encapsulation ratio and are well dispersed in toluene to form a stable colloid.The nanoscale CaCO_3/PS particles were further used to prepare nanocomposite by in-situ polymerization.
